DOCK DESIGN OPTIONS

Wahoo™ offers two different residential systems, the CLASSIC and the CAT 5 (see a comparison under the 'Specifications' tab). Each system is engineered with great value placed on the forces that affect a floating structure that is stressed 24/7. These systems incorporate more metal and reinforcements than competitive docks and are methodically designed to maximize the strength of the material used. And, as the pioneer of the heavy-framed aluminum dock, Wahoo's™ functional experience with aluminum dock is second to none.

  • LAYOUTS

The dock layout or footprint, is often the most critical element to a dock's utility and is generally driven by the expected boating or recreational needs of a user. A waterfront property owner with no boats and is seeking a dock for fishing,
swimming or lounging purposes may opt for a Platform configuration. If one's expectations are to own one or two boats, a traditional Single or Double Slip may be more suitable because of the protection a slip can provide. Or even a Custom Slip
to fit a pwc or odd shaped watercraft.

As you can imagine, there are endless permutations around these basic layouts, but the vast majority of residential docks are based on the following layouts or footprints.

  • ROOF STYLES

Wahoo™ categorizes roof types into three fundamental styles - Gables, Hips and Upper Decks, shown in that order below. The most economical roofs are the Gables and the Hips and between these two options, the Hip roof offers slightly better protection from the elements. The Hip is also considered more attractive than the more cost efficient Gable roof.

When additional recreational space is desired, especially when a larger water level footprint is not possible, our Upper Decks offer a great solution. Wahoo™ pioneered the Sun Deck with Gables style over a decade ago and today this style continues to stand as our most popular roof style (shown in 3rd image).

  • ANCHORING

The method and quality of Anchoring on a floating dock is critical to its durability, longevity and maintenance requirements. For the most part, anchoring is intended to keep a floating dock in place and not for stabilization purposes (see 'Specifications' tab for more information about anchoring).

MATERIALS & COLOR PALLET

With the selection of colors and materials that Wahoo™ offers, a dock owner can add a particular style to their waterfront appearance. They have gone to great lengths to make the look of their dock as flexible as possible, as economically as possible.

  • Roof Colors - With over 18 colors to choose from, the roof panels are constructed of 26 gauge sheet metal and are designed to protect against color fading, extreme sun and salt environments and to endure significant wind and snow loads.
  • Decking Options - Choose to deck your system in Wahoo's own AridDek™ waterproof deck system, IPE natural untreated hardwood, synthetic wood or even concrete.
  • Frame Options - Although the aesthetic features of the dock frame are important, the protection it provides a watercraft is similarly critical. Dock edging is most commonly used to protect a boat's hull from the frame and it can be used over the aluminum mainframe or, for a natural look, over IPE wrap.
  • Roof Poles - The look of the roof poles can be altered significantly by incorporating the natural finish of the marine-grade aluminum, wrapping the poles with IPE wood or powder coating the poles in an Antique Bronze paint.
  • Eaves - Eave appearance can be altered to keep a consistent look throughout the dock. A natural aluminum look is often matched with the natural look on the lower frame and poles. IPE Eave Wrap can be used when the lower frame and roof poles are wrapped in IPE. The Metal Eave Trim is often used to complement the Antique Bronze roof poles.
  • Railings - The railing system consists of 14 unique, proprietary extrusions and castings to create a solid, yet finished structure unlike any other. The entire system is made from marine grade aluminum for long lasting, maintenance free enjoyment and is available in three colors options.

Each and every Wahoo™ Dock is designed using a combination of advanced engineering principles and decades of practical building experience with an emphasis on strength and durability, aesthetic appeal and low maintenance. They continue to lead other dock companies on stylistic measures, incorporating over 35 proprietary castings and extrusions in to their docks to create a 'finished' appearance unlike any other.

IDEAL MATERIALS

The key to designing long lasting, maintenance free dock systems is an understanding and appreciation for the structural, mechanical and chemical properties of the component parts, how they interact, and recognizing the external forces the dock will encounter.

Maintenance Free Materials

  • Structure and Members: 6061-T6 marine grade aluminum has a similar tensile strength as steel yet offers better versatility for flexible designs and significantly more resistant to corrosion.
  • Fasteners and Hardware: Stainless steel hardware is highly compatible with aluminum and adds strength and hardness to the critical bolted connections.
  • Bumpers and Bushings: HDPE and UHMW-PE plastics provide a durable, long lasting insulation barrier that protects boat-to-dock contact and silences metal-to-metal contact on the structure.

Benefits and Value

  • Excellent Weathering: The materials on a Wahoo Dock simpoly will not rust or experience material, structural or aesthetic degradation.
  • Longevity: The structural integrity and aesthetic beauty of our docks remain consistent over time, unlike docks made with other materials where oxidation and decay have a significant effect on their appearance and durability.
  • High Value: Wahoo's unique, proprietary extrusions and castings are designed to deliver preceis structural strength where needed and to give maximum design flexibility and aesthetic advantages without continual upkeep or routine maintenance.
  • Widely Suitable: Because of their resistance to corrosion, our docks are suitable for coastal or inland projects.

ANCHORING

Wahoo Dock Anchoring

Image 1 - Pile anchoring is suitable for heavy load locations and is a good option for docks that do not need to chase the water during seasonal fluctuations. Two piling and multi-piling options are common and the piles can consist of a variety of materials including wood, steel, concrete and fiberglass.

The docks are secured to piles using either Pile Rollers, which consist of UHMW-PE rollers enclosed in an 8" deep aluminum box (which generates very little wear on the piles), or Pile Sliders, which consist of IPE or composite wood slats enclosed in an 8" deep aluminum box.

Image 2 - Pole & Sleeve anchoring is a useful anchoring method for docks that experience heavy wind and wave loads but require the flexibility to move toward or away from shore to chase deep water during seasonal water fluctuations.

The system consists of a rigid sleeve that is attached to the dock through which slides a 4" diameter, 20' pole. Because the sleeve keeps the pole vertical, the pole naturally buries itself into the ground and does not need to be driven unless the bottom is particularly rocky. A winch is commonly secured to the sleeve to reel in a cable attached to the bottom of the pole to facilitate its withdrawal from the ground when the dock needs to be moved.

Image 3 - Stiff Arm anchoring is a relatively economical, effective means for dock anchoring and is especially suitable when a dock layout runs primarily along the shoreline and the dock does not need to chase seasonal water fluctuations. Cables running diagonally between the Stiff Arms are required to adequately secure the dock. In many instances, the gangway provides one 'leg' of the stiff-arm arrangement. Wahoo™ incorporates several Stiff Arm designs depending on the expected loads placed on the system and the overall reach required.

Image 4 - Cable anchoring is a common, cost effective, simple and often the best method for anchoring a floating dock. The flexible system is suitable for situations that can be challenging for certain other anchoring methods - such as, in areas where the water fluctuations are severe and where water depths are extreme. It can also be used on docks that need to chase the water during seasonal fluctuations.

There are four general forms of cable anchoring and each offers a different set of benefits;

  • Dock to Shore - cables run from each side of the dock to the shoreline
  • Dead Weights - cables run from multiple points of the dock to large weights beneath the waterline
  • Combination - this is a combination of the dock to shore and dead weight method
  • Self-Adjusting - similar to the combination method, but includes a self adjusting cable feature
